Baru dua menit terbang, pesawat jenis Boeing 737-800 itu berada di ketinggian 8 ribu kaki (2.400 meter) dan berhenti mengirimkan data.
Kejadian yang terjadi beberapa jam setelah Iran menembakkan rudal-rudal ke markas-markas AS, di Irak sebagai pembalasan atas tewasnya jenderal senior Iran Qassem Soleimani.
Para pemimpin negara-negara Barat telah menyatakan, pesawat itu tampaknya secara tidak sengaja ditembak jatuh oleh rudal darat-ke-udara di dekat Teheran.

Rekaman lainnya, yang difilmkan dari sebuah mobil yang sedang berjalan di kejauhan, memperlihatkan cahaya sangat terang bergerak sangat cepat.
Rekaman ini kemudian memperlihatkan pesawat meledak di cakrawala, menerangi langit gelap.
